Abstract

Drug abuse represents one of the most significant public health challenges in contemporary Indian society, particularly in developing regions. This comprehensive research examines the patterns, extent, and dynamics of substance abuse across the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, encompassing four districts: Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapur, and Kurnool. Based on empirical data from 197 respondents receiving treatment at de-addiction centres, this study presents critical findings on demographic profiles, substance types, addiction patterns, and socio-economic impacts. The research reveals a predominance of middle-aged males (mean age 42.3 years) engaging in regular alcohol and tobacco consumption, with significant ramifications for family structures, occupational performance, and community health. This paper synthesizes findings from multiple research methodologies using ethnographic approaches and statistical analysis, providing a framework for policymakers and healthcare practitioners to develop targeted intervention strategies.
